Nicholas, a Royal Navy veteran with extensive experience in flying Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) operations, incorporated Vaspba Remote Piloted Systems Ltd., based in Weymouth, UK, in June 2018 with his son Daniel. The company was established with a mission to sell, repair, and operate a wide range of remote-control vehicles traversing land, sea, and air. It initially found success in the retail market through the sale of IP67 rated waterproof drones, which have been available since 2016.
Vaspba’s staff brought years of combined experience in UAS operations, enabling them to expertly carry out aerial tasks including mapping, surveys, inspections, and photography. The company’s primary market initially consisted of retail customers who used waterproof drones for various activities such as fishing, hobby photography, and boating.
However, over the years, Vaspba’s market focus has shifted more towards military and emergency services. This transition was primarily driven by the capabilities of the SD4 drone model, which stands out for its ability to operate in heavy rain, land and take off on water, and carry a 2kg payload. Through multiple upgrades, the system has evolved to accommodate a variety of advanced payloads such as thermal cameras, live water sample sensors, and a sonar depth finder.
In an exciting development for the project, Vaspba, as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), acquired full UK rights to modify the SD4 drone. This allows the company to easily integrate the drone with external systems. The team assembles the systems in the UK, conducts all updates and calibrations, and performs test flights before dispatching the drones. Vaspba’s workshop is fully equipped to handle any situation and is stocked with all the necessary test equipment for verifying the IP rating. Currently, Vaspba has the capacity to handle approximately 100 drone orders per month, but they possess the capability to scale up their operations significantly within a relatively short timeframe. This flexibility underscores their commitment to adaptability and growth, hallmarks of their journey so far.
