First Step Forward is a not for profit organisation that promotes Self-Awareness, Self-Care and Self-Help, providing: Advice, Training and Signposting services to Military personnel, Veterans and their Partners on Mental Health or what we refer to as Mind Wellness.

Through the services available, we will be able to offer: Mental Health Awareness Workshops that provides a better understanding of the subject, Mental Health First Aid courses where you can become a qualified Mental Health First Aider and Self-help Workshops, where qualified Coaches and Mentors, will offer alternative therapies such as NLP and EFT.

The aim is to Inspire and Empower individuals to better manage their lives whilst awaiting professional services and further support from other organisations and/or mainstream charities. We achieve this through providing workshops on the subject of Mental Health, assisting individuals to identify their own specific tools, techniques and helpful coping strategies that will aide them whilst awaiting professional support services.

First Step Forward really helps!

5/ 5

Nick is caring and understanding to a degree I have never encountered in anyone. He can sympathise like no other and has helped me in so many ways it would take a long time to go through them all. Nick speaks from his own experiences and is so understanding. The one thing I would say to anyone thinking of going to one of his workshops or training courses is Go For It! You will most certainly not be disappointed and I guarantee you will come away feeling much better for it. I have no hesitation in giving Nick and First Step Forward a 5 star recommendation. First Class.

Q Is this just another form of Therapy and/or Counselling?

No not at all. We leave all that kind of stuff to those who are qualified to provide such services. The Workshops and Training days we provide, are informal, light-hearted, down to earth and very much aimed at providing invaluable knowledge within a safe zone where you can be yourself, with others who can relate to what you are going through, whilst they are awaiting to see the Mental Health specialists.

Q What do you actually do then?

Basically we provide you with information. Now by itself I know that it might not sound much and maybe even a bit naff, BUT bare with me here. Have you heard of the saying that "Knowledge is power"? Well please take my word for it, as someone who is on his own journey with CPTSD and Depression, that it is no different with Mental Health. When you have a better understanding of what is happening to you, the symptoms you are experiencing are validated, you have identified what areas of life challenge you and what specifically annoys/stresses you out, then you are armed with an ability to better manage what direction your life takes. That is what we help you with.

Q Is there a financial cost?

God no, we are doing our utmost to raise the funds, gain grants and apply for funding so we can provide the training days to you at no cost and completely subsidised, sometimes even including your scran! You will have to make your own way to the venue, however, we will assist you where we can with this too and try to arrange car sharing etc.

Q When and where are the courses?

Ha, well we had hoped to have already completed the first this year, however, due to our first sponsor delaying in the release of their funds, we have had to postpone. That being said, as of today - 28 March '19, we are looking to hold our first in Newark towards the end of April and then another in Stratford-Upon-Avon, with another in or around Bristol during May/June time. The events will be put up on our FB Page so like that and/or email us for an update, but if you are on social media, trust me you will see it!
